What is Bacillus Subtilis?

 Bacillus Subtilis

Bacillus Subtilis is a Gram-positive, catalase-positive bacterium which is normally found in soil, water, air, decomposing plant matter and in the gastrointestinal tract of humans.  It is also known as the hay bacillus or grass bacillus.

Bacillus subtilis is a member of the genus Bacillus, and is characterized as a rod-shaped and can form a tough, protective endospore which makes it endure a tough or extreme environmental conditions.  It is a spore-forming bacterium. All other bacteria under the bacillus genus are also spore-forming.

Clinical Study

Many clinical studies on Bacillus Subtilis were conducted but the one that stands out inasmuch as the result is concerned is one conducted by Deerland Enzymes Inc. They trademarked their study on this as DE111™. Deerland Enzymes genome sequenced and tested a probiotic spore of highly effective strain of bacillus subtilis.  The study have shown the strains ability to control microbial populations, promote proper digestion and maintain healthy levels.  For more on this study CLICK HERE.

Previously, B.Subtilis was named Vibrio Subtilis until Ferdinand Cohn renamed it in 1872 to its name today.

In an article published in probiotics.org,  among the many uses of bacillus subtilis are to produce antibiotics such as difficidin, oxydifficidin, bacilli, bacillomyin B, and Bacitracin-helpful in treating bacterial skin infection.  It is also used as fungicide.
